Summer Residency

Classes and Activities:
The Residency is an intensive workshop experience geared towards enhancing and developing the writing talents of the chosen playwrights. New Voices for the Theater is a program which requires attention to detail, a willingness to work hard, and a commitment to daily homework writing and reading assignments. Students are guided by a professional playwright with a national reputation who comes for three weeks to offer individual attention to the writers’ growth and revision process. The Playwrights will spend the first two weeks taking classes and revising their winning play with the help of teachers, directors, and the Playwright in Residence. The residency will also include trips to theater productions, museums, and other activities of interest. Activities will vary from day to day, particularly on weekends and in the final week. Food and Housing:
Students will be housed in Richmond dormitories. The residency fee ($350) helps to offset housing and the cost of breakfast and dinners. Students will be responsible for buying one meal per day. There will be New Voices Resident Advisors and additional Staff Member(s) on call at all times. The staff of SPARC and the participants will take all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety and well being of each participant. As in the past, there will be strict supervision of all participants by the adult Resident Advisors. All participants in the residency will agree to abide by the residency policies and guidelines.

Faculty and Staff:
Directors, actors and stage managers are hired from within the surrounding professional theater community. The students also participate in workshops taught by a variety of teachers and professionals. Favorite instructors in the past have included: Clay McCleod Chapman, David Crank, and Dorothy Holland. The program also includes a Playwright in Residence with whom the residents work closely both in an out of the classroom. Past Playwrights in Residence have included Caridad Svich, Cassandra Medley, Dana Yeaton, D.W. Gregory, Clay McLeod Chapman, and Paul Donnelly.
